The sate of Karnataka, formerly know as Mysore, is a state of strong contrasts, with the modern, industrialized city of Bangalore at one extreme and expanses of rural farming areas at the other. Karnataka also has some of the most interesting historic architecture in India, and a varied and tumultuous history.

Bangalore

Though a modern, bustling city and an important industraial center, Bangalore remains one of India's most pleasant cities. The central area is studded with beautifully laid out parks and gardens, , wide tree-lined avenues, imposing buildings and lively bazaars. Situated 1000 meters above sea level and with a very pleasant climate, it's to Bangalore that many of the multinational establishing themselves in India are attracted. It is said that Bangalore is the fasted growing city is Asia, and is definitely India's yuppie heaven.

Mysore

It's easy to see why Mysore, at an altitude of 770 meters, is popular with travelers since it's friendly and easy-going with plenty of shady trees, well maintained public buildings, clean streets and a good climate. The contrasts with the state capital, Bagalore, couldn't be greater,. Mysore has chosen to retain and promote its heritage while Bangalore is hell-bent on confornting the 21st century.
Mysore is also a crafts center, and there are numerous shops selling a large range of sandalwood, rosewood and teak carvings, and furniture. Probably the most stunning display can be seen at Cauvery Handicrafts in the centre of town.
